Users of mobile devices running Google's Android operating system were warned over the weekend against new scareware that tries to get them to download a fake antivirus app.
Symantec, in a blog post, said the scareware involved mobile ads scaring users into thinking their phones or tablets had been infected with the “Trojan: MobileOS/Tapsnake.”
"The malware alert is fake. Tapsnake is an older Android threat ... that just happens to be mentioned in these ads to make them appear more authentic," it said.
Oddly, it noted the scareware also appears on Apple's iPhone even if the malware does not target iOS devices.
Symantec said this "is all a trick designed to convince the user to download an application."
It advised users not to install apps outside trusted app stores and to instead trust reputable security software. — KDM, GMA News
